Jinxed

Nate told someone today that it's been almost 3 months since we had pour money into the Taurus and that maybe it didn't totally suck as a vehicle. Then it wouldn't start. Had to have it towed. Pray it's the starter because that's still under warranty.

New Phone

I'm up for a new phone and I can't decide between two. Samsung Intensity or Jest? I like the latter better, but since it just came out yesterday, it doesn't have any reviews yet. Any suggestions?

Lego Harry Potter

Nate preordered this game for me a while ago and it finally came today! So far, so good. I might actually play a video game all the way through!

Money Management

I'm trying out a few online money management sites that are supposed to be helpful in keeping track of our budget. They've been such a pain to set up though that I'm wondering if I should just stick with my old-school notebook.

Something I Can't Stand

I absolutely cannot tolerate listening to South Park. The characters' voices assault my ears, make my skin crawl, and compel me to claw people's eyes out with my finger nails. All I can hear is the innumerable boys I went to high school with who insisted on doing South Park impersonations.

Never Have I Ever

My lesson for camp today was a little on the short side, so we played Never Have I Ever. Or as one girl insisted on calling it, "I Ain't Never."

Blueberries!

A neighbor said I could go pick from her blueberry bushes while she's out of town. I got a pretty good haul from today's pick. I smell some blueberry muffins in my future...

New Pastor

Today is our new pastor's first Sunday. It's also our first Sunday at our new time of 9:30. Praying everything goes well.

Front Porches

I'm a bit of a porch connoisseur and the porch we spent hours on this weekend was AMAZING. I enjoyed talking and laughing with the girls on that porch immensely. Plus there was good food and swimming! The 26 hours spent there were totally worth the 8 hours of driving.

Girls Weekend

Today after work, I will be headed out of town for a weekend with some girl friends. I'm really looking forward relaxing and enjoying their company.

Over Scheduled

I think I may have over scheduled myself a wee bit this week and next between the college camp, the neighborhood camp, GED tutoring, getting a little work done at school, softball, yoga, cleaning out the kids' room, and getting ready for the new pastor at church. I don't want to cut any of it out, so I guess I'll just have to quit complaining.

Trivia Night

At trivia tonight, our team only got one question wrong. If it had been a team of one (me) I would have only gotten one right. Clearly, I am an essential member of my team.

Nothing of Importance

The title, while true, is more about the song it makes me sing. It's a song from an Independence Day musical my brother and sister were in at our church about 12 years ago. The following line alludes to King George's diary entry.

"It was the year of 1 and 7-7-6, July the 4th it caught our eyes. It said, "Nothing of importance seemed to happen today." Nothing of importance? Surprise!"

These lyrics make me ponder several questions. Why was our church putting on a 4th of July musical? Why is this the ONLY line I remember? Why don't I have anything more interesting to write about?

Squash Bugs

My squash plants are all dying because Squash Vine Borers laid eggs I can't see which then hatched inside the vine and then ate it from the inside out. And according the the internet, there's very little I can do to stop them. Grrr!

21!

We had 21 kids at the neighborhood camp today! Praise God!

Neighborhood Camp

Camp starts today at 1:30! Praying for lots of kids and plenty of adults to help.

Dismissing Preconceived Notions

Some people have a distorted view of my neighborhood. That somehow poor = scary. What it really means is unknown = scary. I was a little scared this evening to go into part of my neighborhood I've never walked through alone before. Not only did I learn that I already know several kids on those streets (who ran to greet me) but also I learned that men with large tattoos of naked women on their arms can be very polite.

Ikea!

Nate and I are off to Ikea to pick out a dresser for the kids' room and then we're going out to eat at Flip Burger! Krispy Kreme shake, here we come!

Lazy Sunday

Today was filled with crafting while watching tv shows, reading, a playing softball.

Herbed Broccoli Sandwiches

Today for lunch we will enjoy broccoli sandwiches from the Simply in Season cookbook (which everyone should purchase- it's great!). Here's the recipe:

Saute 2 cups of chopped broccoli and 1/2 cup of chopped onion in 1 tablespoon of oil. Add a few dashes of dried basil, thyme, and salt.
Take 4-6 slices of french bread (I use bread made from this recipe) and top with broccoli mixture. Sprinkle on a little cheese (I like mozzarella) and toast or broil until cheese is melted.

Hashbrown Quiche

I'm making this for dinner tonight. We've had it once before and it is super yummy (but not at all healthy)!

Thaw 3 cups of hashbrowns and pat dry. Then press then into a pie pan. Drizzle 1/3 c melted butter around the edges. Bake for 25 minutes at 425 degrees

While the crust is cooking, whisk 4 eggs and 1/2 cups of milk. Add 1 cup of ham or bacon (cubed or crumbled), 1 cup shredded cheese, and 1/4 cup of chopped onion. Pour into baked hashbrown crust, reduce oven temperature to 350 and bake for 35 minutes.

Playing Nintendo

Even though Nate is a big time gamer, we don't often play video games together (because I have no hand-eye coordination). But I've been playing a few minutes of the above game almost daily because the 2nd player was clearly created for non-gaming wives. All I have to do is pick up coins by pointing the Wii-mote at them. Thank you, Nintendo, for creating a game I can play with my husband without crying.

Sleeping In

I went to bed last night around midnight and didn't wake up until 9:15! I can't remember the last time that I slept that solidly, that late- though I'm sure if it happened in the last 3 years, I blogged about it.

Toy Story

Nate and I just got back from our date- dinner and seeing Toy Story 3. It was so enjoyable. Creative and clever, I highly recommend it.

Too Hot

I hate that it's so hot in the afternoons that I don't want to do anything. I feel like I've wasted several hours every afternoon, but I can't bring myself to do anything that involves going outside.

Crazy Librarian

If the image of me riding around town on my old blue bicycle in a broomstick skirt wasn't crazy enough, imagine the bike basket full to the brim with books.

GED

It's time for my weekly GED tutoring session. Please pray that God gives me wisdom because this is not turning out like I planned.

Tummy Ache

Every afternoon from about 1:00-4:00 my tummy hurts lately. Can you get a stomach ache from the heat?

Door to Door

Every summer, we have a few door-to-door salespeople come around, usually selling books. The interesting thing about these people? They're in their late teens and they're from other countries. The young man who came by a few days ago was from Estonia. By the time he got to our house at 1:00, he said he'd already been working for 5 hours and still had 8 more hours to go. That's right. This kid came to American to sell books for 13 hours a day, 6 days a week in the sweltering Georgia heat! What company is hiring these kids? Where are they housing them? How much are they paying them? If it's not actually illegal, it sure sounds inhumane.

Since Nate is gone at Annual Conference for the day, I got the new Alice in Wonderland from Red Box. Now I can watch it without Nate's comments about how much he hates Johnny Depp.

Senior Discount Day

I forgot Wednesdays are Senior Citizen Discount Day at Kroger. I will not go on Wednesday afternoons when I'm in a hurry anymore. I nearly ran down a grandma or two.

77 degrees!

Thanks to yesterday's brief thunderstorm, the house got down to 77 with the windows open!

After a longing look at a friend's Facebook pictures at Disney, my desire to pursue a dream job as Cinderella has been renewed.

On Show

Today I will teach my lesson to 10 student in front of 15 student teachers. Can you say intimidating?

Tshirts

I've been working on a few crafts out of tshirt material (rag rug, bag, quilt). It seemed like such a good idea when I started... now several weeks later, I am ready to be done with tshirts.

Camp and Camp

L2S camp went well today and I got a few things done for the neighborhood camp that will start next week. Oh, and tomorrow we're helping at Camp Viola. Too bad our camping trip to Helen this weekend fell through- I don't think there's enough camp in my life.

First Day

I've got the first day of camp jitters. So thankful no one will be observing me until tomorrow.

Heat

Softball is more fun when it isn't 95 degrees with 90% humidity.

French Bread

I tried a new recipe from the More With Less cookbook today. I hope it tastes as good as it looks!

Movies

Thanks to the liberry, I've been enjoying quite a few chick flicks (Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, The Devil Wears Prada) and musicals (Mama Mia, Hairspray) while I work on some craft projects.

Rock Band

Just enjoyed a a few rocking a few songs with Noelle and Chuck.

Sigh of Relief

Another year of VBS is over. Though not having a single child from the neighborhood was disappointing, I think in other aspects, it was rather successful.

Grits!

A few days ago I followed the advice of a friend and pours some instant grits on the ant hills in our yard. Today, no more ants! So exciting to find an inexpensive, eco-friendly way to get rid of those pesky ants!

Nate is watching Tropic Thunder and I wasn't really paying attention. I forgot how funny those fake movie previews at the beginning are. I also forgot for a minute that they are fake.

We had 17 kids at VBS, plus exactly enough food and adult volunteers. My prayer for tomorrow is that we get a few kids from the neighborhood.

Little Neighbor

I heard yesterday that our little neighbor moved away. I went by the house a few minutes ago, and sure enough, it's empty. I really wish I knew where he was or had the opportunity to say good bye.

Change of Plans

Had to reschedule my haircut for tomorrow after finding out about a meeting for my summer camp job. The meeting went well and camp starts on Monday!

I'm getting my hair cut for the first time in almost a year. I've been trimming it myself, but there's a point when there's no original haircut left to trim.

It's VBS time

Today is the first day of our Vacation Bible School. Please pray that lots of kids show up, enough volunteers show up, everyone has a good time, and that the kids learn sometime too.

Quality or Quantity

Feeling the pressure to keep up the posting quantity, but fearing too many of my posts are already lacking in quality.

Nate got me this cookbook for our anniversary and we're having calzones for dinner with Alton's homemade pizza dough. I think they're going to be very yummy.

Liberry

I just got back from the liberry where they had 2 movies on hold for me (we call the public library in town the liberry- thanks, Homer Simpson). I love the Pines system where I can put movies, audiobooks, and books on hold from libraries all over the state. It makes having a small liberry a little more bearable.

For My Sister

My sister reads my blog when she's trying to distract herself from studying. She says I need to post 10 times a day, but I'm afraid my summer is not quite that exciting.

West Side Deli

A new restaurant opened down the street today and their cheese burger was so good! They'll have a limited menu until 4th of July, but you should definitely check it out and support our local businesses!

VBS

Nate and I just got back from going door-to-door handing out VBS invitations. 2 hours and I feel really optimistic about our Vacation Bible School.

Dr. Who and Van Gogh

I just teared up watching the most recent episode of Dr. Who which is about Van Gogh. I'm a nerd twice over.

Weekend in Review

We had a great time at Brickstore. Moving went smoothly but was exhausting. My parents' new house is wonderful. Got to spend some time with Bisa while helping her sort and pack up her old bedroom. Now we're home and I'm going to bed.

Moving

Spending the weekend helping my parents move to North Carolina.

Airport

We're off to the airport to pick up Brian and then to hang out for a few hours and pick up Bisa. Then it's off to Brickstore Pub to celebrate 5 years of marital bliss!

Anniversary Dinner

As part of dinner tonight, we will enjoy a side of green beans from our own garden! This is pretty amazing when you consider that last year we only grew 15 beans all season.

5 years ago today

Today is our 5th wedding anniversary!

Paint the Town

Bummed that I had to leave the paint scraping to go to a meeting at school. I'd much rather get paint chips in my hair, eyes, and nose than sit in a 3 hour meeting.

Excuses

I heard the alarm go off at 7:15, but I didn't get up for my morning run. My excuse? I don't have any clean sports bras. Although it is a legitimate excuse, I hope that making excuses does not become a habit.

Lie to Me

I had a very difficult time keeping my facial expressions (or even my body language) under control during the meeting today. I don't think that anyone in that room would have had to work for the Lightman Group to know that I was not enjoying myself.

Work

I've enjoyed 11 days of uninterrupted summer, but today and tomorrow, I need to work at the school.

Yoga Return

Today I went to yoga for the first time in over a month. It was wonderful. I really, really enjoy yoga.

Weather

According to weather.com's 10 day forecast, the only days it's not supposed to rain are the 3 we're out of town. Oh well, guess we have a good excuse for the waist high weeds in the front yard.
